Powerlifting Competition Bag Essentials: What to Pack for Meet Day

What’s in Your Powerlifting Competition Bag? Essential Meet Day Gear for Powerlifters

Competition day is finally here. You have spent weeks or months training hard, dialling in your lifts, and preparing for this moment. Now, standing over your empty gym bag, you ask yourself: what exactly do I pack?

Looking around at most powerlifting meets, it is clear many lifters show up either totally underprepared or with a bag full of random stuff. Don’t be that athlete. Success on meet day comes down to preparation. Here is your essential competition bag checklist.

1. Printed Copy of the Rules

Read the rulebook from start to finish and bring a printed copy to the meet. Do not trust random advice or guesswork when it comes to commands, equipment checks, or scoring. Too many lifters lose points or bomb out because they ignored the basics.

2. Performance-Focused Food and Hydration

Bring a dedicated food bag with prepped meals, snacks, and drinks you have used in training. Do not rely on takeout, convenience stores, or the venue’s water supply. Fuel with purpose-built foods that support performance and avoid gut issues. And no, a bag of gummy worms does not count as fuel.

3. Spare Clothing

Pack a full change of clothes. Strange things happen on meet day — be ready. It is smart to have an extra set in your bag and another backup outfit in the car.

4. Compliant Singlet and Gear

Bring an extra approved singlet, plus knee sleeves, wrist wraps, elbow sleeves, straps, and wraps that meet your federation’s rules. If you lift in knee wraps, pack two fresh sets. Do not gamble on a stranger wrapping your knees correctly — practice or bring someone you trust.

5. First Aid Kit

Include basics like bandages, alcohol wipes, antiseptic cream, ibuprofen, and aspirin. A small first aid kit can save your day.

6. Lifting Shoes and Backups

Bring your primary squat, bench, and deadlift shoes — and a spare pair in case of emergencies. This is not the day to experiment.

7. Your Own Chalk Supply

Never trust the venue’s chalk. Pack your own, and bring more than you think you will need.

8. Event-Specific Tools: Tacky for Strongman

If you are competing in strongman, bring your own tacky — and different types for different events. Never assume the venue will have what you need.

9. Callous Care: Superglue and New Skin

Tear a callous mid-meet, and you may need quick fixes like superglue or New Skin spray to finish your lifts. Be prepared.

10. Folding Chair and Personal Fan

Gyms get hot and crowded. Bring a foldable chair and a small fan to create your own recovery space between lifts.

11. Bathroom Supplies

Local meets often lack proper bathroom essentials. Pack your own toilet paper and wipes. Trust us on this one.

12. Headphones for Focus

Block out distractions and stay in your zone with your pre-meet playlist or focus tools.

13. Meet Day Supplements

Have your short-acting pre-workout or other legal performance supplements on hand. For some, that means caffeine, modafinil, nicotine gum, or fast-acting compounds. Be smart and plan your timing.

14. Use a Cart for Easy Transport

Wheeling your gear in makes setup faster and easier. Load your entire kit into a rolling bag or cart and claim your spot. People may look at you funny, but you will be prepared.

Final Thoughts

Winning your powerlifting meet is about execution, not luck. Preparation lets you focus on the lifts, not the logistics. Pack smart, plan ahead, and take ownership of your performance. Whether you win or not, you will walk away knowing you left no stone unturned.
